　 両極を除いた世界のいたるところに分布（岡田ら 1965）， 世界中の温帯，日本各地に普通，船底，漁網の汚損生物（西村 1992）．

　 共生するγプロテオバクテリア Candidatus Endobugula sertula によって 抗がん剤として利用できるブリオスタチンを生産する（Davidson 1999）．
